CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite vs Costco Mastercard: the 4% card Costco won’t take

The CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite pays 4% on groceries, gas and EV charging for a $120 fee, but it's a Visa, so Canadian Costco warehouses and gas bars won't take it. Use it at the supermarket and the CIBC Costco Mastercard at Costco. For our sample household the pair earns $558 a year, or $438 after the fee.

The CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite pays 4% on groceries, gas and EV charging, against 1% on the CIBC Costco Mastercard at the supermarket, but it's a Visa, so you can't use it in a Canadian Costco warehouse or at a Costco gas bar. It costs $120 a year; the Costco card is free. The two don't compete so much as split the wallet: Dividend for the supermarket and bills, the Costco card for Costco, its gas and restaurants. Can you use a CIBC Dividend Visa at Costco?

Not in the warehouse or at the gas bar. Canadian Costcos take Mastercard, debit and cash, and every Dividend card CIBC sells today is a Visa (the Dividend Mastercards are on CIBC's list of cards no longer available). The Dividend card does work on Costco.ca and at Costco Travel, which take Visa, but it earns only its 1% base rate there. See does Costco take Visa in Canada and paying at a Costco gas station.

Even if Costco took Visa, the 4% wouldn't apply: CIBC pays it at merchants classified as grocery stores and supermarkets, and Costco is coded as a wholesale club. Our guide to Costco's merchant code explains why that matters for every grocery card.

What are the Dividend Visa Infinite caps?

CIBC's benefits guide puts two limits on the bonus rates. The 4% and 2% apply to the first $20,000 a year of spending in the bonus categories (groceries, gas, EV charging, transit, dining and recurring bills) or the first $50,000 of all card spending, whichever comes first. After that, everything earns 1%. Both limits reset after your December statement. CIBC by Expedia's 2% sits outside the limits.

$20,000 a year is about $1,667 a month in those categories, which covers most households. The Costco card has its own caps: $5,000 a year on gas and $8,000 on Costco.ca; see how the Costco card's cash back works.

How much does each earn for a Costco household?

Sample data: our two-card guide's household, spending $500 a month in the warehouse, $200 on Costco gas, $250 on restaurants, $400 on supermarket groceries, $300 on recurring bills and $600 on everything else.

SetupCash back a yearAfter annual fees
CIBC Costco Mastercard only$378$378
Dividend Visa Infinite only (debit at Costco)$396$276
Costco card at Costco, gas and restaurants; Dividend Visa Infinite for groceries and bills$558$438
Same split with the no-fee Dividend Visa$426$426
Same split with BMO CashBack (no fee)$474$474

In year one, with the fee rebated, the Infinite pair is the best setup here. From year two the fee changes the order: for this household the free BMO CashBack pairing earns $36 more. The Infinite beats BMO only once groceries and bills together pass about $1,000 a month, or if you also buy gas away from Costco at 4%. See BMO CashBack vs the Costco card.

Is the no-fee CIBC Dividend Visa a better partner?

The no-fee CIBC Dividend Visa pays 2% on groceries, 1% on gas, transit, dining and recurring bills, and 0.5% on everything else, with limits of $20,000 in those categories or $30,000 in total. It needs only $15,000 of household income. As a partner to the Costco card it earns $426 for our household, and the Infinite pays for its fee over it once supermarket groceries reach about $350 a month. Never use the no-fee Dividend for everyday purchases: 0.5% is half what the Costco card pays.

Which has better insurance?

The Dividend Visa Infinite, clearly. It includes out-of-province emergency travel medical (up to $5 million for the first 10 days of a trip, if you're 64 or under, whether or not you charged the trip), rental car collision and loss damage (vehicles up to $85,000 MSRP), $500,000 common carrier accident coverage, mobile device insurance up to $1,000 for two years, and purchase security with extended warranty. The CIBC Costco Mastercard shares the device, purchase and warranty coverage but has no travel or rental coverage. For a Costco Travel booking, that's a real reason to pay with the Infinite; see when a travel card beats the Costco card.

Which should you get?

  • You want one card for Costco: the CIBC Costco Mastercard. The Dividend card can't be used in the warehouse or at the gas bar.
  • Groceries and bills over $1,000 a month, or you travel and want the insurance: both. The Costco card at Costco, the gas bar and restaurants; the Dividend Visa Infinite for groceries, other gas stations and bills.
  • Smaller grocery bill, no travel: the Costco card plus a no-fee grocery card such as BMO CashBack or Tangerine; see the best two-card setups.
  • Under the Infinite's income requirement: BMO CashBack is the better no-fee partner ($474 against $426 for the no-fee Dividend Visa).
