Costco cash back gift certificate: is the CIBC card's reward a catch?

The CIBC Costco Mastercard pays its cash back once a year as a Costco gift certificate, not as cash. It doesn't expire, but you lose the whole year's cash back if you close or switch the card, or it isn't in good standing, on December 31. Who that suits and who should pick a cash card instead.

The Costco cash back gift certificate is how the CIBC Costco Mastercard pays you: everything you earn from January 1 to December 31 arrives as one certificate with your January statement, to spend in Canadian Costco warehouses. The good news: CIBC says it doesn't expire and there's no limit on the total you earn. The catch: it isn't cash, and you can lose the whole year's balance if your account isn't open and in good standing on December 31. If you shop at Costco every month anyway, the certificate is as good as cash; compare cash-paying cards on our best cards for Costco page if you don't.

How does the Costco cash back gift certificate work?

From CIBC's gift certificate page, checked October 4, 2026:

1. Earn all year. Cash back builds from January 1 to December 31; you can track the balance on your statement or in CIBC's app.

2. Receive it in January. The certificate comes with your January statement on your statement cycle date, on the last page of the statement and in CIBC Mobile Banking and Online Banking.

3. Redeem it at a warehouse. Show the barcode, on your phone or printed, at checkout in any Canadian Costco warehouse, along with your CIBC Costco card or Costco membership card.

The balance resets to zero on January 1. Transactions still pending on December 31 count toward the next year.

Does the Costco cash back certificate expire?

No. CIBC says plainly that "gift certificates don't expire", and unused ones stay available in the CIBC Mobile Banking App and Online Banking. You can save several years of certificates for a big purchase, such as a TV or a set of tires.

When do you lose your cash back?

This is the real catch. Eligibility is decided by your account's status on December 31, and the rules are strict:

Situation on December 31What happens to that year's cash back
Account closed on or before December 31Forfeited
Switched to a different CIBC card on or before December 31Forfeited
Not in good standing (past due, over the limit or suspended)Forfeited, even if you fix it in January
Switched or closed after December 31You still get the previous year's certificate
Costco membership expired, card still in good standingYou get the certificate, but must renew your membership to redeem it

So if you plan to cancel the card, do it in January, after your certificate arrives, not in December. And pay at least the minimum on time near year end. CIBC's FAQ also lists an active Costco membership under good standing, so keep your membership current.

Where can you use the certificate?

Only in person at a Canadian Costco warehouse, and only by the primary cardholder. Additional cardholders earn cash back for the account but can't redeem the certificate themselves. CIBC also says you can use it even if you pay the rest of your bill with debit, cash or another Mastercard.

Is a gift certificate worse than cash back?

Only if you'd struggle to spend it at Costco. A member spending $300 a month in warehouses spends $3,600 a year there, so a certificate of a few hundred dollars gets used on the first trip or two. For an occasional shopper, a certificate is less flexible than cash back paid to your statement, and an annual payout means waiting up to 12 months. Our cash back calculator shows what the certificate is worth on 5 sample budgets.

Is the certificate the same as the Executive reward?

No. CIBC calculates its cash back separately from Costco's Executive membership reward, which Costco pays to Executive members on eligible purchases. If you have both, you get 2 separate rewards each year, and they stack on the same warehouse purchases.

Is a text message about your Costco cash back real?

No. CIBC warns that texts asking you to follow a link to redeem Costco cash back may be fraudulent, and says neither Costco nor CIBC asks for personal information by text. Your certificate is only in your statement and in CIBC's own app and online banking.
