The Costco Visa card people search for is the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi, a U.S. card: Citi markets it to American members, and there's no Canadian version. Its rewards can only be spent at U.S. Costco warehouses. Canadians get the CIBC Costco Mastercard, which Canadian warehouses require (they don't take Visa) and U.S. Costcos also accept, but it charges a 2.5% foreign transaction fee on U.S. purchases. For regular shopping at U.S. Costcos, a Canadian Visa with no foreign transaction fee usually beats both. Compare Canadian options on our best cards for Costco page.

Can Canadians get the Costco Visa card?

Not as a Canadian product: Citi offers it in the U.S., and Costco's card in Canada is the CIBC Costco Mastercard. Even setting eligibility aside, it would be awkward for most Canadians, because the reward certificate can only be redeemed at U.S. warehouses and expires on December 31. What card should Canadians use at a U.S. Costco?

U.S. Costco warehouses and gas stations take Visa, debit and Shop Cards, and the only Mastercard they list is the CIBC Costco Mastercard, so other Canadian Mastercards won't work. Your choices:

  • The CIBC Costco Mastercard: accepted, but its 2.5% foreign transaction fee outweighs its 1% warehouse cash back, so you lose about 1.5% on every U.S. purchase.
  • A Canadian Visa with no foreign transaction fee: accepted at U.S. Costcos and avoids the 2.5%; the better choice for snowbirds and regular cross-border shoppers.
  • Debit: accepted, but check your bank's currency conversion fees.

Details are in our guide to paying at a U.S. Costco.

Can you use Visa at a Costco in Canada?

Not in the warehouse or at the gas station: Canadian Costcos take Mastercard, debit and cash. Visa works on Costco.ca and at Costco Travel. That's why the Canadian Costco card is a Mastercard; see does Costco take Visa in Canada.
