Kirkland Signature in Canada: what Costco's brand is, who makes it, and when it's worth buying

Kirkland Signature is Costco's own brand: everything from coffee and dog food to vitamins and socks sold under one private label, launched in 1995 and named after Kirkland, Washington, where Costco was based at the time. It is huge: Costco's CEO said in December 2024 that Kirkland products were about a third of Costco's sales. Our advice: judge each Kirkland product on its own, by price per kilo or litre against the brand next to it, because the label covers a wide range of products from many different suppliers.

What is Kirkland Signature?

Costco's private-label brand, sold in Costco warehouses, on Costco.ca and through Costco's delivery partners. The brand kept the Kirkland name after Costco moved its headquarters to Issaquah, Washington. Co-founder Jim Sinegal's explanation: "Nobody could spell Issaquah, so we kept it."

Who makes Kirkland Signature products?

Costco doesn't publish a list. It says every Kirkland product is "carefully researched, tested, hand-selected, or custom-created" by its own team, and that it gets them by formulating its own products, co-branding with national and international brands, and partnering with manufacturers. Co-branded products name the partner on the package; most Kirkland packages don't name a maker. Claims online about who makes a given product are usually guesses, and a supplier can change without the package looking different.

Is Kirkland Signature as good as name brands?

Often, but not automatically. Costco says the brand aims for "the highest quality standards at the lowest possible prices". In practice the useful test is a direct one: compare the price per kilo, litre or unit with the name brand on the next pallet, and read the ingredients or specifications side by side. Our price tracker shows how prices move over time, and the Costco Reddit community is where Canadian members compare Kirkland products with name brands.

Can you return Kirkland Signature products?

Yes. Kirkland products fall under Costco's satisfaction guarantee like other merchandise, so most can be returned for a refund with no time limit stated. The usual exceptions still apply, such as the 90-day limit on electronics. See the Costco return policy.

What Kirkland Signature dog food does Costco Canada sell?

Costco.ca lists Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain dry dog food in several recipes, checked October 1, 2026:

Costco describes the Nature's Domain formulas as grain-free with probiotics and omega fatty acids. Grain-free diets aren't right for every dog, so check with your vet before switching. Stock varies by warehouse and online.

Is there Kirkland Signature minoxidil in Canada?

Not on Costco.ca. As of October 1, 2026, Costco.ca lists Rogaine Men's Hair Regrowth Foam with 5% minoxidil, not a Kirkland Signature version. Ask at your warehouse's Costco pharmacy what it carries.

Can you buy Kirkland Signature without a Costco membership?

Only in limited ways. Costco sells to members, but a non-member with a Costco Shop Card can shop in the warehouse on a day pass, which Costco allows 2 times a year. Membership costs $65 a year for Gold Star; see what each membership costs.
