The Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard is the rare no-fee card that beats the CIBC Costco Mastercard inside Costco: it pays 1.5% on everything, or 2% if you have a qualifying Rogers, Fido or Shaw service, against the Costco card's 1% in the warehouse. The Costco card still wins at Costco gas and restaurants (3%). Both cost $0, but Rogers needs $80,000 of personal income. On our sample household, using both beats either one. How does the Rogers Red World Elite compare with the Costco Mastercard?
From Rogers Bank's help centre and CIBC's documents, checked October 4, 2026:
| CIBC Costco Mastercard | Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 | $0 |
| Minimum income | $15,000 | $80,000 personal or $150,000 household |
| Costco warehouse | 1% | 1.5% (2% with a Rogers, Fido or Shaw service) |
| Costco gas | 3% (first $5,000 of gas a year) | 1.5% (2%) |
| Restaurants | 3% | 1.5% (2%) |
| U.S.-dollar purchases | 1%, minus a 2.5% fee | 3%, minus a 2.5% fee |
| Yearly cap | Category caps on gas and Costco.ca | Bonus rates on the first $61,000 a year, then 1.5% |
| Cash back paid | Costco certificate, once a year | Redeem from $10 against recent purchases; 1.5x value on Rogers, Fido or Shaw bills |
| Works at U.S. Costcos | Yes | No (U.S. warehouses list only the CIBC card among Mastercards) |
Which card should you use inside Costco?
The Rogers card, if you have it. In the warehouse it pays 1.5% to 2% against CIBC's 1%, a 50% to 100% better return on your biggest Costco spending. Costco warehouses take any Mastercard, so it works at the till; see which cards Costco accepts. At the gas bar and at restaurants, switch to the Costco card for 3%.
How much does each earn for a Costco household?
Sample data: the household from our two-card guide ($27,000 a year, including $6,000 at Costco, $2,400 on Costco gas and $3,000 at restaurants).
| Setup | Cash back a year |
|---|---|
| CIBC Costco Mastercard only | $378 |
| Rogers Red World Elite only (1.5%) | $405 |
| Rogers Red World Elite only, with a Rogers service (2%) | $540 |
| CIBC for Costco gas and restaurants, Rogers for everything else (1.5%) | $486 |
| Same, with a Rogers service (2%) | $594 |
Rogers also has a no-income-requirement sibling, the Rogers Red Mastercard: 2% on everything with a Rogers service, otherwise 2% on U.S. dollars and 1% on the rest, on the first $26,000 a year. Without a Rogers service, it's no better than the Costco card in the warehouse.
Is the 3% on U.S. dollars worth it for cross-border Costco runs?
Not at U.S. Costco warehouses: they accept Visa and, among Mastercards, only the CIBC Costco Mastercard. Elsewhere in the U.S., Rogers' 3% minus its 2.5% conversion fee nets about 0.5%, better than the 1.5% you lose on most cards, but a no-fee-abroad card does better; see no foreign transaction fee cards.
What about payouts and insurance?
Rogers lets you redeem from $10 against purchases from the last 90 days, and gives 1.5 times the value when you redeem against Rogers, Fido or Shaw bills, which is strong if you're already a customer. CIBC pays a Costco certificate each January. Rogers lists extended warranty, purchase protection, rental car collision and out-of-province medical coverage; the CIBC card has no travel or rental coverage but includes mobile device insurance. See CIBC's coverage.
Which should you get?
- You qualify for Rogers ($80,000 income) and shop at Costco often: both. Rogers in the warehouse and for everyday spending, the Costco card at the gas bar and restaurants.
- You're a Rogers, Fido or Shaw customer: the 2% rate and 1.5x redemption make Rogers your main card.
- You don't meet the income requirement: the CIBC Costco Mastercard, paired with a no-fee grocery card.
