Costco Business Mastercard vs personal Costco Mastercard: which CIBC card, or both?
The CIBC Costco Business Mastercard has the same $0 fee and core cash back as the personal card, plus 2% on shipping and insurance services, up to 9 free authorized users with spending limits, a $100 welcome bonus and a lower 20.75% purchase rate. Its insurance covers business purchases; the personal card's doesn't. One membership can hold both.

The Costco Business Mastercard vs personal comparison comes down to what you buy: both CIBC cards cost $0 and earn the same 3%, 2% and 1% core rates, but the Business card adds 2% on shipping and insurance services, up to 9 free authorized users with spending limits, a $100 welcome bonus and a lower 20.75% purchase rate. The biggest difference is in the fine print: the personal card's insurance excludes items bought for business use. If you buy for a business, put those purchases on the Business card; CIBC lets one Costco membership hold both.
How do the Business and personal Costco Mastercards compare?
From CIBC's card pages, both rates summaries (current as of August 1, 2026) and both insurance certificates, checked October 4, 2026:

What does the Business card earn that the personal card doesn't?
2% instead of 1% in three places: shipping (CIBC gives couriers and Canada Post as examples), eligible insurance services (transactions Mastercard categorizes as professional services) and Costcobusinesscentre.ca orders. Example only: a business spending $400 a month on shipping earns $96 a year on the Business card against $48 on the personal card. Each of those categories, like the Business card's restaurant and gas rates, earns its bonus on the first $8,000 a year, then 1%, per CIBC's benefits guide. Everything else earns the same; see what the personal card earns on 5 sample budgets.
Does the insurance cover business purchases?
This is the difference most people miss. The personal card's certificate excludes "items purchased by or for use by a business for commercial purpose" from purchase security and extended warranty, and its mobile device insurance excludes devices "purchased by, or for, a business". The Business card's certificate, also underwritten by Belair, has no business-use exclusion: you get 90 days of purchase security, up to 1 extra year of extended warranty and mobile device cover up to $1,000 per claim on purchases for the business. A laptop or phone for work is better charged to the Business card.
Can you have both cards on one Costco membership?
Yes. CIBC says that with a single Costco membership you can hold a Business Mastercard for business expenses and a personal Mastercard for personal ones. Each account has its own cash back balance and its own gift certificate each January, and CIBC says Business card cash back is linked to your membership and can be spent on business or personal purchases. Either card can double as your membership card.
Who is responsible for the Business card's balance?
You are. The Business card is governed by CIBC's Business Cardholder Agreement (Personal Liability), so the primary cardholder is personally liable, not the business. Approval is based on a $15,000 individual income, and CIBC publishes a list of the business information and documents it asks for. The insurance also covers the primary cardholder and authorized users, not the business itself.
Which card is better for shopping at a Business Centre?
For in-store shopping, they earn the same 1%. The Business card pays 2% on Costcobusinesscentre.ca orders, against 1% on the personal card, and its Pace It plans include those orders. Any member can shop at a Business Centre; see our Business Centre guide and how it differs from a regular Costco.
Which one should you get?
- No business spending: the personal CIBC Costco Mastercard, or the World version if you qualify.
- You run a business, even a side one: the Business card for business purchases, for the insurance, the employee cards and the 2% on shipping. Keep the personal card for household spending so the two stay separate at tax time.
- Staff buying for you: the Business card, where you can set a spending limit for each authorized user.
