Costco swing set guide for Canada: cedar vs steel, delivery, assembly and space

Costco.ca sells cedar, wood and steel swing sets from Backyard Discovery, KidKraft and Lifetime. Delivery is to your backyard or curb, assembly is not included, and the biggest sets take two adults a full day to build.

By Cost Check Editorial · Last reviewed Oct 1, 2026 · 4 min read

A Costco swing set comes from one of three brands on Costco.ca: Backyard Discovery (all cedar), KidKraft (wood) and Lifetime (steel), from about $1,200 to about $3,700 when we checked on October 5, 2026. Standard delivery is included, but assembly is not: the sets arrive in boxes weighing up to about 155 kg, and Lifetime recommends 2 adults and 8 to 12 hours for its biggest structure. Measure your yard for the safety zone first, then decide whether to build it yourself or hire help.

Should you buy a cedar, wood or steel swing set?

  • Cedar (Backyard Discovery): naturally resists decay and looks like furniture, with pre-cut, pre-drilled and pre-stained pieces. Wood needs occasional checking for splinters and loose bolts.
  • Wood (KidKraft): similar look, often with factory-assembled panels that speed up the build; the Outdoor Odyssey carries a 5-year limited warranty on its wooden parts.
  • Steel (Lifetime): zinc-coated chains and UV-resistant plastic, free-standing with no cement needed, and less upkeep. It looks more like a school playground.

For a long Canadian winter outdoors, steel is the low-maintenance choice; cedar is the one most families find nicer to look at.

How is a Costco swing set delivered?

Standard shipping is included. The sets we checked listed about 10 to 15 business days; the KidKraft Outdoor Odyssey listed 35 to 50. A carrier calls to book a 4-hour window between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on a weekday, and someone 18 or older has to be home to sign.

Where it ends up depends on the set: cedar and KidKraft sets come with backyard-threshold delivery (to the backyard or a covered area), while the Lifetime Big Stuff Deluxe arrives curbside by lift-gate truck. Assembly and packaging removal are not included, and Backyard Discovery asks you to schedule delivery within 30 days of shipment.

How long does it take to assemble a Costco swing set?

Plan a full day, or a weekend. Lifetime recommends 2 adults and about 8 to 12 hours for the Big Stuff Deluxe. Backyard Discovery and KidKraft sets come with step-by-step 3D instructions in the BILT app, and KidKraft's pre-assembled panels shorten the build, but the boxes are heavy: the Montpelier weighs 147 kg and the Castlewood 155 kg.

If you'd rather not spend the weekend on it, independent local assemblers offer gazebo, shed and playset assembly. Ask whether they have built your brand before and how they anchor or level it.

How much space does a swing set need?

More than the set itself. Lifetime lists a required clear area of 8 m by 8.6 m around the Climb & Slide, whose frame is 4.4 m by 4.6 m, and 10.5 m by 10.2 m around the Big Stuff Deluxe. Check the listing for your model, choose level ground away from fences and trees, and plan a soft surface such as wood chips or rubber mulch under swings and slides.

Can you return a swing set to Costco?

Yes. Swing sets fall under Costco's satisfaction guarantee, which sets no time limit for most products, and Costco.ca returns of large items are picked up by carrier; see how to return a Costco.ca order. Returning a set you have already built means taking it apart, so count the parts against the instructions before you start.

How do you pay less for a swing set at Costco?

  • Buy before spring: prices and stock move with the outdoor season, so compare in late winter.
  • Price adjustment: if the price drops within 30 days of buying, Costco refunds the difference; see the price adjustment guide.
  • Rewards: on a $2,000 online order, the Executive 2% reward is worth $40 and the CIBC Costco Mastercard pays 2% on Costco.ca, another $40.
