Costco World Mastercard vs Costco Mastercard: what's actually different?
Almost nothing. The CIBC Costco World Mastercard has the same $0 fee, the same cash back, the same 21.75% purchase rate, the same 2.5% foreign transaction fee and the same insurance as the standard card. It needs $50,000 of personal income or $80,000 household, and adds Mastercard's World perks.

Costco World Mastercard vs Costco Mastercard: on cost, cash back and insurance, they're the same card. CIBC says the World version "has the same fees and rates", and its own documents confirm it: $0 annual fee, 21.75% purchase interest, a 2.5% foreign transaction fee and one shared insurance certificate. The differences are the income you need ($50,000 personal or $80,000 household instead of $15,000) and access to Mastercard's World perks. Our take: if you qualify, the World card costs you nothing extra, but don't stretch for it. Both are compared on our best cards for Costco page.
What is the same on both cards?
Everything that affects what you pay or earn. From CIBC's card page, its rates and fees summary (current as of August 1, 2026) and the insurance certificate, checked October 4, 2026:
| CIBC Costco Mastercard | CIBC Costco World Mastercard | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | $0 | $0 |
| Additional cardholders | $0 | $0 |
| Restaurants and Costco gas | 3% | 3% |
| Costco.ca, other gas and EV charging | 2% | 2% |
| Everything else, including warehouses | 1% | 1% |
| Purchase interest rate | 21.75% | 21.75% |
| Cash advance rate | 22.49% (21.99% in Quebec) | 22.49% (21.99% in Quebec) |
| Foreign transaction fee | 2.5% | 2.5% |
| Minimum credit limit | $1,000 | $1,000 |
| Minimum income | $15,000 | $50,000 personal or $80,000 household |
The category caps are the same too: the 3% and 2% gas rates apply to the first $5,000 of gas and EV charging a year and Costco.ca's 2% to the first $8,000, then 1%. Cash back is paid the same way on both: once a year, as a Costco gift certificate with your January statement. Our cash back calculator works the rates through 5 budgets; the answer is identical for either card.
Does the World Mastercard have better insurance?
No. CIBC publishes one certificate of insurance for "CIBC Costco Mastercard or CIBC Costco World Mastercard", underwritten by Belair Insurance. Both cards get the same 3 coverages:
| Coverage | Limit |
|---|---|
| Purchase security | Loss, theft or damage for 90 days from purchase |
| Extended warranty | Doubles the manufacturer's warranty, up to 1 extra year |
| Mobile device insurance | Up to $1,000 per claim, less depreciation and a 10% deductible |
There's no travel medical, trip cancellation or rental car coverage on either. See what the card covers when you travel.
What are the CIBC Costco World Mastercard benefits?
CIBC describes them as "experiences available only to World Mastercard cardholders" and links to Mastercard's own benefits page rather than listing them. They're Mastercard network perks, such as offers and experiences, which Mastercard sets and changes; they're not insurance and don't change your cash back. See the current list on Mastercard's benefits page.
Is the World Mastercard better for travel?
Not really. Both charge the same 2.5% on foreign currency purchases, so a $2,000 trip abroad costs about $50 in conversion fees on either card, which is more than the 1% cash back ($20) you'd earn on it. Neither includes travel insurance. For trips outside Canada, a no-foreign-transaction-fee card does the job better; book through Costco Travel with either card for the same cash back.
Who qualifies for the World Mastercard?
You need a personal income of at least $50,000 or a household income of $80,000 a year, plus CIBC's usual requirements: a Costco membership, Canadian residency, the age of majority and good credit. If you don't meet the income test, the standard card gives you the same cash back. Our guide on how to apply lists everything CIBC asks for.
Is there a downside to the World Mastercard?
Not for you. CIBC's rates summary notes that "merchants may be charged higher fees for the acceptance of premium cards (World Mastercard)", so the World card can cost the store a little more each time you use it. You pay the same either way.
Which one should you apply for?
- Income under $50,000 personal and $80,000 household: the standard CIBC Costco Mastercard. You lose nothing that matters.
- You meet the income test and like Mastercard's perks: the CIBC Costco World Mastercard.
- You don't care about the perks: either one; they earn the same.
