Costco travel insurance in Canada is Manulife insurance sold to Costco members: Manulife offers Costco members travel, health and dental, and term life coverage, and its Costco site lists emergency medical, all-inclusive and multi-trip travel plans. Before you buy, check the 4 things your credit card may already cover: emergency medical, trip cancellation, rental cars and baggage. The CIBC Costco Mastercard covers none of the travel ones. Plan your trip on our Costco Travel page.
Who provides Costco travel insurance in Canada?
Manulife. Costco's own magazine describes Manulife's "exclusive insurance offerings for Costco members, including health and dental, term life and travel insurance", with travel options from emergency medical coverage to trip cancellation. Costco Travel, the booking service, is separate: it sells trips, and it suggests checking whether your card offers travel protection before you book; see paying for a Costco Travel booking.
What plans does Costco's travel insurance include?
Manulife's Costco site lists these plans for travelling Canadians:
| Plan | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Emergency medical (single trip) | Medical emergencies on one trip outside your province |
| All-inclusive (single trip) | Emergency medical plus trip cancellation, interruption and other travel coverage |
| Travel Canada emergency medical | Medical coverage for trips within Canada, outside your home province |
| Multi-trip all-inclusive | Several trips a year under one policy |
Manulife's plan pages didn't load for our checks, so we haven't quoted prices, coverage limits or member discounts. Get a quote for your ages and dates, and read the pre-existing condition rules, which decide most claims.
Does the CIBC Costco Mastercard include travel insurance?
No. The CIBC Costco Mastercard includes purchase security, extended warranty and mobile device insurance, but no travel medical, trip cancellation, baggage or rental car coverage. The World version doesn't add travel insurance either. Our CIBC Costco Mastercard travel insurance guide has the details.
Which credit cards include travel medical insurance?
From the issuers' insurance documents, as covered in our comparison guides:
| Card | Annual fee | Travel medical | Other travel coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIBC Costco Mastercard | $0 | None | None |
| CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite | $120 | $5 million, first 10 days, 64 or under | Rental car, common carrier accident |
| MBNA Rewards World Elite | $120 | $2 million, first 21 days, under 65 | Rental car, flight delay, baggage, common carrier |
| BMO CashBack World Elite | $139 (waived year 1) | $5 million, first 8 days | Roadside assistance and more |
| PC World Elite | $0 | First 10 days, under 65 | Rental car |
Card coverage usually applies only to the first few days of each trip and stops at an age limit, and some cards require you to charge the trip to the card. Read your certificate of insurance before you rely on it.
Do you need Costco travel insurance if your card covers you?
Often not for short trips, but these are the usual gaps where a separate policy, Costco's or another, earns its cost:
- Trips longer than your card's limit: 8 to 21 days on the cards above; snowbird trips need their own policy.
- Travellers 65 and over: most card coverage stops at 64 or 65.
- Trip cancellation: few no-fee cards include it, and it matters most on expensive, prepaid trips such as Costco Travel packages.
- Pre-existing conditions: card plans exclude conditions that weren't stable before the trip; a purchased policy lets you answer the medical questions and buy cover that fits.
How should Costco members choose?
Start with the card in your wallet. If it's the CIBC Costco Mastercard, you have no travel coverage, so either buy a policy for each trip or carry a card that includes it for travel bookings. Then compare Manulife's Costco quote with your bank's or your employer's plan for the same dates and ages. For Costco Travel packages, pay with a card that includes trip cancellation or add it to the policy.
